【Exhibition】Primal Volcano : Naoki Ishikawa

Saturday, April 18th to Sunday, June 21th, 2026

Overview

This exhibition features approximately 40 photographs by internationally renowned photographer Naoki Ishikawa (1977- ), depicting Mediterranean volcanoes and their surrounding environments, including Mount Etna in Sicily and the volcanic islands of the Aeolian Islands. Mount Etna and the volcanic islands of the Aeolian Islands, the subjects of this series, are rare active volcanoes worldwide, known as the cradle of volcanology, and are registered as World Heritage sites for their academic importance. Japan is a volcanic nation, and Tomakomai is home to Mount Tarumae, an active volcano, but the mountains depicted in Ishikawa's work appear very differently. The mountainous landscapes, which strongly reflect Ishikawa's sensitivity to the workings of the Earth, seem to invite the viewer into the unreachable depths of the Earth, or perhaps to the origins of life.

The works exhibited in this exhibition were photographed in 2024 at the invitation of Fondazione OELLE Mediterraneo Antico in Catania, Sicily(Italy), an artist in residence organized by the Italian curator Filippo Maggia. This will be their first public showing in Japan. The photographs will be exhibited in Italy in 2027.
