| Located on the Pacific side of Central Hokkaido with Sapporo as the heart, Tomakomai plays an important role as the pivot of the sea,air and land transportation networks. Linked to various countries as well as other parts of Japan by ferries and international regular container lines, the Tomakomai Port serves as the "marine entrance of Hokkaido". With more than one third of its runways included in the administrative district, the role of the New Chitose Airport as Japan's northern gateway is becoming more and more important, making the most of its geographical advantage to be the closest to North America and Europe. Tomakomai is also an access point of land transportation, such as railway trunk lines, national highways and expressways, and its various transportation networks create new distribution routes. |
